Checkmate

You stood in the middle of your board,
With the players on the outset, looking in.
You thought you were the centre,
You thought you were one of the deck.
In reality, you were merely a pawn,
Pushed & pulled always ready to pass go.

You had a board full of moves to make,
A sequence to follow and call Checkmate.
You dropped the coin I handed,
Too scared to call heads or tails.
And now your move has been forced,
Your tail between your legs.

I calculated the moves for you,
Whilst you were busy in the middle,
I planned your escape and our happy ending.
I felt your hand tremble in mine,
I felt your grasp loosen and slowly slip away.
Of all the moves, I didn’t expect this one.

We both stayed firmly on our squares,
Not willing to play our next moves.
Not knowing they would be the same,
The game would be over.
Whilst you were busy in the middle,
The other players calculated their exit.

We both yelled ‘Checkmate’
But I still don’t know who won,
Our relationship turned game.
